The Curious Case of the Disappearing Motifs

Back in January 2015 I had a design frenzy, the only problem was, I had no idea what to call the patterns. As they were all generally motifs, I decided to give them girls names, from A to Z. I got to L before my crochet mojo left the building. I now realise that the last ones will never be designed and its been holding me back.

So I could either delete the patterns…or re-crochet and rename them, and that is what I’m in the middle of doing. So apologies if I cause any confusion in the process, but I shall do further posts as I progress detailing what the motifs were and what they have been renamed. Assuming of course I don’t lose my mojo again, it’s such a fragile thing and needs long vacations in Tahiti…which I believe is a magical place…according to Phil Coulson…anyway back to crocheting!

Amelia’s Motif is now Vintage Star Doily.

Bella’s Border Motif is now Gerbera Lace Border.

Caroline’s Granny Square Motif is now Cotton Candy Granny Square.

Imogen’s Motif is now Barleycorn Motif.

Circular Squares

In my previous post about using the Magic Loop method with circs, I’ve been experimenting with shapes, well one shape so far, a square.

square 'n' circs

I needed to cast off a little looser, and blocking would help, but not bad for a first attempt methinks.

I found the method in one of my old vintage books and modified it for circs, here’s the basic pattern, hope it makes sense!

Square

1st Round: Cast on 8sts, divide between the two needles using the Magic Loop method.
2nd Round: Knit.
3rd Round: Inc in each st around. (16 sts)
4nd Round: Knit.
5rd Round: *Inc in 1st st, K2, inc in next st* around.
6th Round: Knit.
7th Round: *Inc in 1st st, K4, inc in next st* around.
8th Round: Knit.
9th Round: *Inc in 1st st, K6, inc in next st* around.
10th Round: Knit.

Continue increasing as above on next and every alternate round, noting that there will be 2 sts more in the group of sts. Cast off loosely after an increase round.

Enjoy 🙂

I give you my heart

While waiting for yarn to be delivered, again, I thought I’d crochet some tufts, and this is what I ended up with! Just a little amusement for a Sunday morning 🙂

I used DK weight yarn, and although the pattern was written for one colour, I chose two! A 4.00mm hook was used, the motif measures approximately 5″/13cm square. US Terminology was used throughout.

Abbreviations:
ch – chain
st(s) – stitch(es)
EXsc – extended single crochet (pull up a loop in stitch, yarn over, pull through 1 loop on hook, yarn over, pull though final 2 loops on hook.)
Tuft – Work 4 EXsc into stitch, remove hook from loop and insert in first stitch, pull loop through to form tuft.

Note: ch 2 counts as 1 EXsc

Foundation Row: Ch 24, EXsc in 4th ch from hook, EXsc across, ch 2, turn (22 sts)

Row 1 – 3: EXsc across, ch 2, turn.

Row 4: 9 EXsc, 1 Tuft, 11 EXsc, ch 2, turn.

Row 5: EXsc across, ch 2, turn.

Row 6: 7 EXsc, *1 Tuft, 1 EXsc* repeat from * to * twice, 1 Tuft, 9 EXsc, ch 2 turn.

Row 7: EXsc across, ch 2, turn.

Row 8: 5 EXsc, *1 Tuft, 1 EXsc* repeat from * to * 4 times, 1 Tuft, 7 EXsc, ch 2 turn.

Row 9: EXsc across, ch 2, turn.

Row 10: 3 EXsc, *1 Tuft, 1 EXsc* repeat from * to * 6 times, 1 Tuft, 5 EXsc, ch 2 turn.

Row 11: EXsc across, ch 2, turn.

Row 12: 3 EXsc, *1 Tuft, 1 EXsc* repeat from * to * 3 times, 2 EXsc, *1 Tuft, 1 EXsc* repeat from * to * twice, 1 Tuft, 5 EXsc, ch 2 turn.

Row 13: EXsc across, ch 2, turn.

Row 14: 5 EXsc, 1 Tuft, 7 EXsc, 1 Tuft, 7 EXsc, ch 2 turn.

Row 15 – 18: EXsc across, ch 2, turn, except for Row 18, fasten off, sew in ends.
